My thoughts
A woman, Maya Landry, recently divorced takes a job in desperation, needing the money. It’s a solitary job looking after summer ski homes in Montana during the winter months and onwards. She’s happy to have the autonomy and peace this job gives so she can continue healing.
But is it really the best job?
After finding a body in one of the homes the tension ramps up, the pace picks up as she realises she must run for her life.
Maya sees a tall, ruggedly handsome man who appears to be watching her in the local bar she goes to now and again. He turns up again the evening that she discovers the body. Who is he? Why is he telling her that she will die if she doesn’t get away?
When Maya hears someone breaking into her home she realises they really are coming after her, just like he said and so she runs. A car slows down and the driver tells her to get in. It’s the man, Riley as she comes to know, from the bar! Is he helping or will she regret accepting his help? It’s her only choice, she climbs in and her life is never the same again.
A year later Maya is a changed woman. Her name is now Lara Gibson living thounds of miles away and working at a bar in Austin. She’s settled in, she has found a kind of family and is happy in this new life.
This, however, is not where it ends and once again her life is cruelly shattered…
One evening two men ask after her in the bar! Who are they? Maya is very uneasy, she has been found! This is just the kind of emergency Riley, who she has missed and never forgotten, said she could call him about. Lay low ‘til I figure something out he tells her.
What happens next is fast moving, tense, painful and in more than one way heartbreaking. Can Maya survive another chase and even if she does what kind of life will it be?
With terrific characters, compelling storytelling The Hiding Season is a thoroughly enjoyable and thrilling read.
