2024 Reading Challenges

The Historical Fiction Reading Challenge for 2024.
Marg at theintrepidreader hosts this challenge. You are welcome to join if you have participated before or if it is your first time! Here’s my original post which has all the details.

My challenge
Victorian Reader (5 books) – Renaissance Reader (10 books). I thought 10 books would be a good start but will be happy if I read 5 books.
My list
1. Rudolph Walsh’s Last Case by Elsa Drucaroff translated by Slava Faybysh. I’m reading this for a blog tour and will be posting my thoughts on 8th March. From Corylus Books.

2. So Late In The Day by Clare Keegan. I’m reading this during Reading Ireland Month challenge in March so will be posting my thoughts then.
I also hope to read Three Little Birds by Sam Blake | The Translators Funeral by Ronán Hession | One or two of the short stories from Dubliners by James Joyce for Reading Ireland Month.

3. Sleeping Murder by Agatha Christie. This will also count towards The Classic Club I will post that list to start in April 2024 running to the end of March 2029 so my thoughts on this book will be posted in April.
I have a list of 50 books to read for The Classic Club which I will post in early April to meet the requirements of that challenge.

4. The Kitchen by Simone Buchholz. I’m reading this for a blog tour from Orenda Books and Random Things Tours. My spot is on 12 April.

5. Sparks of Bright Matter by Leeanne O’Donnell. I’m reading this for the Compulsive Readers and @bwpublishing blog tour. My spot will be on 16th April.

6. The Case Is Closed (#2 Miss Silver Mystery) by Patricia Wentworth. I’m also reading this for The Classic Club challenge and #The1937Club read which takes place 15 – 23 April.

If this list goes to plan then I will have read enough to be considered a ‘Victorian Reader’ and be well on my way with plenty of time left of 2024 to read further books and attain the level of ‘Renaissance Reader’.

If I do go on then these will be the other books –
7. Street Haunting by Virginia Woolf. This will also count towards The Classic Club challenge. I now hope to read this in 2025.

8. Orwell’s Roses by Rebecca Solnit. This will also be read for Reading Orwell 2024. #ReadingOrwell24 is hosted by Brona’s Books. Unfortunately this challenge was a washout for me so I now hope to read this in 2025.

9. Momentum Mori by Muriel Spark. I now hope to read this in 2025. It’s on my The Classics Club list so I’ll definitely be reading it before that challenge ends.

10. Silly Novels by Lady Novelists and other Essays by George Eliot from Renard Press.

This will also go towards The Classic Club challenge and so I hope to read this in 2025.
Other books

11. Budapest Noir: Ilana Gets A Phone by Alison Langley from Dedalus Books I was invited to read this by the author.
12. The Venus of Saló by Ben Pastor from Bitter Lemon Press I am reading this for a RandomThingsTour BlogTour on 29 May.
These will go towards my 2024 European Reading Challenge.
13. Fair Play by Tove Jansson
14. Travelling Light by Tove Jansson
15. The Woods In Winter by Stella Gibson
16. The Man Called Noon by Louis L’Amour
There are probably other books that also qualify as Historical Fiction that I read in 2024. Take a look at my list of books read in 2024 then pop the title into search to the bottom right to see my thoughts.
So I’m calling this a win for the HistFic Reading Challenge (2024).

So, there it is! My list for Historical Fiction Reading Challenge 2024. I’ve indicated when a book will also count to another challenge or is part of a BlogTour and when I anticipate sharing my thoughts. For those books that are also being read for blog tours the dates are fixed, there may be some wriggle room with other books which, as this is a year round challenge, I think will be okay. I will put links to the books on this post as I post my thoughts and will also link back to the relevant place on Marg’s blog.
