Reading #NovNov23

What length is a Novella?

Should we mind if we read longer or shorter?

If you take 250 words per page then 17,500 comes out to 70 pages. The novelette starts at 7,500 coming out at 30 pages.

I will be taking both these categories together, reading stories from around 30 pages up to 200 pages in length, to give myself the widest choice.

So, no, I don’t think we should be too hung up on word/page count especially between Novelette and Novellas.

What am I reading?

Having said that so far I’ve committed to just one book – The Hermit by Louise Walters. It was on last years list but I didn’t get to it so I’m determined to read it this year. I’ll be quite happy if this is my only read this #NovNov23.

I have two blog tours in November neither are Novellas so I’m factoring that into the plan.

So, apart from The Hermit (133 pg) what might I read? I’ve got a few possibilities I’m going to give the author then the book/possible choices.

Edgar Allen Poe

  • The Fall of the House of Usher (28 pg)

Jane Austin

  • Love and Friendship (60 pg)

Jeanette Winterson (I will choose one from this list or more if I have time)

  • Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (194 pg)
  • The Passion (173 pg)
  • Weight (113 pg)
  • Courage Calls to Courage (81 pg)

Virginia Woolf

  • How Should One Read a Book? (39 pg)

Claire Keegan

  • The Forester’s Daughter (54 pg)

James Joyce

  • Love (42 pg)

So, if I do find time and manage more I could read five, six or seven books! Wouldn’t that be an excellent #NovNov23?

  3. It is strange what disagreement there is about the ‘correct’ length of a novella. I am a firm believer that the book should be as long as the story requires – and sadly, it appears that too many writers go on for far too long, after the story stopped requiring it!

    1. Indeed, MarinaSofia, whatever it takes to say what is needed to tell the story that the writer wants to tell.

  4. We are counting a novella as under 200 pages, which is probably a little generous but sure why not!

    1. Exactly, Cathy, thanks for confirming under 200 pages – it’s a reasonable decision. Worrying beyond that regarding how much below is a worry too many – better to be reading than not! Janet
